Turin to Pisa... Italy is a beautiful, verdant country and as we discovered today it has some blooming super roads, very few of which are straight. Oh, and its service stations sell beer. In a similar vein to our experiences yesterday in the Alps, we found ourselves throwing these wonderful bikes around some incredible mountain roads. What's around the next bend? ...only one way to find out. The exhilaration is hard to put into words. After such excitement, a late lunch was taken in Portafino which is somewhere I've always wanted to visit. The place is the stuff of a million watercolours. Pete and Digger even got to feed toast to the fish in the harbour while the less fishy among us relaxed in hot sunshine only wishing that bike gear was more conducive to hot weather. A ninety mile thrash along the coast road which is a spectacular mix of tunnels and viaducts delivered us to Pisa by eveningfall.
While Pete counts down the remaining seven days to his 50th birthday, the rest of us wonder whether his parents got their sums wrong and he has indeed been 50 for at least a few years now. Our affectionately nicknamed 'Davros' (leader of the Daleks for those of you who spent their formative years reading 'Just 17' rather than doing something more noble) sustains his reputation as a 9pm Cinderella beyond which time of the evening his life force goes into standby mode. Word is too that he's wearing pink at the wedding. Nice...
In other news... Rich has been splashing the cash about various Portofino designer shops and purchases include Gucci pannier liners, a nice pair of Dior crocodile skin bike boots and a diamante studded pair of leather chaps currently on sale at Chanel. He did try on the latest Christian Lacroix gentleman's leather undergarment but it didn't fit. Some people will believe anything they read... Also making the headlines, Tony ate food today and may no longer squeeze into the size 6 jeans he brought with him. Digger has, under pressure, offered free earplugs to anyone sharing a room with him and I bloody wish I'd taken him up on the offer.
And finally... thanks go to the low life who jemmied one of the cases open on my lovely BMW while we had breakfast this morning. He had though just watched me put my laptop, ipad and passport into it before abandoning it in the pursuit of a croissant and a coffee and therefore I award myself today's 'Reidy' and will be eternally grateful to the designer of the BMW's alarm which scared off the thieving sod before he could nick my gear.
